When I got a call from my friend, inviting me to her place for cocktails...while sitting in her green Jaquar convertible...parked in her garage...facing the back wall to discuss a possible art commission, I reminded myself, “well, this IS Hollywood!”
We discussed a number of approaches and from what I knew about some of her activities and interests I proposed making a kind of daily oracle. This device would give her a prediction every time she entered or left her garage. After a few design meetings, she approved a set of images and activities and came up with the title the “Either/Oracle”.
Because she is a writer...there is a computer. Because she enjoys travel, there is an airplane and a car, because she likes to scuba dive...there is a shark. She has over 100 snow globes, loves and collects art, lives with and pampers a couple of very spoiled dogs. She enjoys and prepares gourmet meals and has ventured to far corners of the greater Los Angeles area with me in search of the perfect BBQ joint. All of these things contributed to the set of images you see on the oracle.
The Oracle starts it’s prediction cycle whenever the garage door is opened or the key is pressed. For about 30 seconds there is a flurry of visual activity as the background scans and neon indicator lights flash. Once it has made a selection part of the activity stops and the normal animation continues....planes flying, perhaps, or the car or the shark fins...cows swirling around the twister and so on. The oracle remains lit for about 30 minutes and then shuts off...waiting to give direction and guidance...once again.
